Don't let Wagner's reputation for grand darker works (and prejudices) make you think that he is stuffy or dry. This book is actually very funny. A boy dealing with parents and getting into mischief .... I was surprised at how conversational and colloquial the book was. It is witty, and easy to read (obviously this is a translation). He was an interesting kid. Smart, but not some isolated ethereal wunderkind. I found myself liking him a lot.Product details

My Life Vol 1 Facsimile Reprint Edition Richard Wagner 9781434417312 Books Reviews
The verbosity was undoubtedly, one of the most emblematic features of this true renovator of the Opera. A genius who established indeed "a before and an after" in what concerns the Opera. Initially regarded as simple entertainment vehicle, Wagner conferred it of solemn grandiosity and sublime expression. His indomitable and well known efforts for making of the opera the closest representation of his beloved ideal; the concretion of the Total Art regarded as fusion of the Greek Theatre, imbued of mythological influences acquired for him the undisputed supremacy in this sense, being Bayreuth the supreme place where year after years, the people go to admire and enjoy every one of his reminded Operas.
His profound baggage of impressions about facts, considerations, thoughtful speeches, reflexive quotations and formidable memory have permitted us to dive into the very core of his intellect. This book must be read over and over without compelling rush, according the distinguished enchant and showy refinement.
Without restrictions or hindrances I cordially invite you to acquire this extraordinary diary, plenty of witness and notable erudition all the way through.
Don't miss it by any reason.
Must read. Both volumes. One of the heights of autobiography. Why this isn't more popular is beyond me. The only flaw is that Wagner stops his narration some twenty years before his death. You will have to read Cosima's diaries to get the rest (and they aren't nearly as good).
I really enjoyed this book. Why did I think it might be boring? It is not at all boring, just a fascinating look at how life was lived in the nineteenth century.
Great book. I bought both volumes, and it is a great and must read from the mouth of the man himself.
First knowing Mark Ortiz is not a prerequisit for the enjoyment of this book, Although it does help.
Second delving into the former nature of one of Northern Michigan's upstanding citizens is quite a laugh out loud time.
Having read other comedic biographies let me enjoy Mark's story telling and style that much more.
The book is well written and allows the reader to parcitipate in the misadventures of Ortiz and his friends.
Highly recommended both for avid fans and newcomers to Wagner. Couldn't put the book down!
Much tedious minutae, but still interesting given the author. The often casual references to now famous works of his is interesting. Absolutely no description of his compositions. The ongoing chaos of his day-to-day personal life makes the creation of such extraordinary works all the more remarkable. Of course, as with all autobiography, approaching with healthy skepticism is advised.
